Critique of Website - Final Project

The website I am redesigning for my final project is http://www.interpunk.com

The target audience for this website is teenagers and young adults (mostly males) who are into punk rock music and punk rock fashions.  From my competitive analysis, I learned that many other competitive websites were using a color palette and overall design that did not fit with a punk rock look.  Some sites were selling punk clothing but the design of the sites had a more pop-punk feel or even a heavy metal feel.  I learned that simple colors (such as true red and black on white) are important to achieve a genuine punk look that would reflect the focus of the site.

Images also need to reflect the style.  Too many different images crowd a site and give a cluttered feeling.  Choosing a solid striking image, even for use as a background image, is more effective.  I redesigned the site by  creating a clean, streamlined look and choosing colors, images, and font styles that would add interest and reflect the stark punk rock theme.

What works in the original site: The skull logo works, and the tagline, “The Ultimate Punk Music Store!” captures interest.  But most of the elements in the design don’t work well at all.  The color scheme, which is mostly blue, yellow, and white, the “Interpunk” text, which is a loud yellow, and the images of blue bricks and background image of an evening sky/cityscape all give the site a cartoon-like “Halloween” feel.  This does not match the punk rock theme.

There are way too many mini repetitive images on the site, such as overuse of little skulls near the navigation or yellow stars bordering the top of the site. All the images clash (the bricks, the stars, the skulls) and make the site look cluttered.

The navigation has miscellaneous main pages that need to be streamlined/eliminated.  I redesigned by focusing on the main products - clothing and music. The navigation sidebar on the left contains too many pages under “departments” and “quick find,” which can be contained in the main pages. There is another extremely long sidebar on the right for “popular bands.” There is way too much to look at and read on the home page, and a lot of this information would be better contained in other pages - having so many items for sale, images, and sales text on the home page makes it hard for the viewer to focus.

Decent use of grid, but nothing that stands out.  Site is flushed a little more to the left by design.  No white space, which the site could use.  The navigation is clear & upfront but contains too many navigation pages.  The typography is clear, but, besides the main logo typography, is unexciting and has little variation in size and style.

My redesign addresses these issues and I am aiming for more use of stark/ironic photography and clean pages, along with the a more punk rock color palette of red, white, and black to go with the punk/underground theme.

Competitive Analysis

Three punk clothing/punk music sites:

1. http://machetemfg.com

Pros: Strong color palette.  The black, white, & red colors have a strong impact that goes with the punk rock image.  Strong, simple punk logo.  Easy navigation.  The site looks like it would be appealing to their market — mostly guys in their teens & twenties that are into punk rock fashions.

Cons: The home page scrolls on too long, with too much information (text & images) below the fold, giving the site a cluttered feel that could be overwhelming to potential customers. It would be better to choose just a few items to promote on the home page, then save the rest for the other pages on the site.

Also, the large box on the front page would promote the items better if it were in flash, instead of displaying just one kind of item, like scarves, that may not interest everyone.

2. http://www.dp-77.com

Pros:  The logo looks strong and fits the site — a skull with two safety pins.  The skull goes with the punk image of the site, & the safety pins reflect the clothing aspect.

The navigation is easy and the navigation is contained in an interesting graphic, looking like ripped or cut pieces of fabric.

The crumpled paper look under the categories list adds texture. Would be nice to see it extended to more of the site.

Cons: Too much use of white on the site, not much impact. Does not look punk enough for a punk site.  Too many small images crowded together on the home page. Distracting “zipper” border — the use of the zipper image on just one side would be enough.  Site looks more “pop punk” than punk. Boring use of font — the font looks like a courier font throughout the site — using different size fonts and different types of fonts would add more interest.

The logo looks good.  It is a skull with two safety pins.  However, the “Categories” list also has a safety pin image right below the logo, which is a bit of overkill on the pin theme.

Text at bottom, below the fold, is white on black with no images.  Needs more design elements to be more dynamic, and less text.  Good use of grid.

3. http://www.punkstuff.com

Pros: Looks like a professional site.  Nice use of flash on the home page to display featured items for sale.  Good use of background images to frame the navigation and logo.  Simple logo, and clear & easy navigation.

Cons: Logo would look better if it were displayed longer across the background banner. The logo font looks too modern for a punk site — a classic punk type would look better.

The color palette of red & black has great contrast, but the red hue is too rusty/orangey red for punk — looks a little too heavy metal.  A brighter, more true red/bright blood red would go better with the punk image and fashions displayed on this site. Use of angel images in background reflect more of a tattoo site or rock site than a clearly punk site.

3 Websites I Like

Here are three websites I like:

1. Skate Warehouse:  http://www.skatewarehouse.com/

I like the use of flash on the home page to show all the new clothing and upcoming events.  I like the simple & easy navigation of the site.  The site design gives a lot of information but still feels organized & clear.

Type of Website: Commercial (selling skateboards & skate clothing)

Audience:  Mainly males (& some females) aged pre-teen to late 20s who love skateboarding and skate fashions.

Goals for this Website:  To sell streetwear and skateboards to more customers across the US and internationally.  To build a following for the site and increase sales.

2. Raw Art:  http://www.rawart.org/

I like that there are videos and photos in this website that make it visually appealing.  It has a warm feeling through the design and the interviews with the children who go there.

Type of Website:  Organizational/non-profit

Audience:  Families and Kids age 6-19 - also elementary & high schools and potential donors (foundations, etc.)

Goals for this website:  To get more people involved in the arts and in this organization.  To be a leader in after-school activities.  To raise money for this non-profit and create more art projects for the kids in the Boston area.

3.  http://www.beehiveboston.com/

I like the use of text and graphics in this website and how the designer used the text in a playful and inviting way.  I like the color choices which also make the restaurant seem like a fun place to be.

Type of Website:  Commerical (Nightclub/Restaurant/Jazz Club)

Audience: Local people who like jazz music, mainly in their 20s and 30s.

Goals for this website:  To get more local customers and get more people interested in their club/restaurant.
